Writing Orders

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:10 am

The best way I can begin explaining orders is to show you examples, good and bad, then critique them. The first example is how NOT to write orders.

Example #1: (BAD)

1. convert all governments to a mild dictatorship and begin singing praise for my leadership and the good of industrialization
2. begin industrialization in all countries not yet being fully utilized
3. begin production in all available factories of the limpet mine (ask me if you don’t remember this baby)
4. send ambassadors to yyyyyy and xxxxx and build embassies in all countries where they aren’t yet
5. pray to god to give me a more exact list of the major players of country’s that I have so I can compile data on them
6. begin a major recruiting process, posters, recruiters in schools, letting little boys and girls play with guns, letting big boys and girls play with bigger guns, etc etc, make the armed forces seem like the coolest place in the world

This is generally the worst example. The Player’s (herein known in the male gender) orders focus on only one real aspect of the game, gearing up for war. Whats wrong with that? Well, the game just started, its not imminent there will even BE a war, it is very BAD to start recruiting for a war when it doesn’t even like one is brewing.
Breakdown:
1. Governments aren’t something you can ‘convert.’ What is set, is set and you can’t change it to suit your whims.
2. This order would take many turns and gazillions of dollars, so not really good wording
3. The ‘limpet’ mine is his win all, kill all weapon. these are dumb.
4. Embassies are good, but don’t expect an ackownledgement of such minor details.
5. No direct wording to God. Only do that through seperate e-mails.
6. this is ok, but then again ‘coolest’ is defined by those being recruited, and they may think the armed forces suck, you can’t just go and change that.
Example #2: (OK)

1. Send out a message to every other player that I intend to remain out of any diplomatic conflicts, but will support other players if they give a reason for me to.
2. begin refocusing all military troops and equipment to emphasize on defense. Have all nuklear weapons ready and waiting to fire. 3. Keep strongest defense at the “border”(shores) between me and xxxxx and yyyyy’s territories.
4. Start public campaign to promote patriotism so that more males (and females) will join the military.
5. boost federal funding in education, this money should come from cutbacks in offensive military spending.

This one is only slightly better. again he focuses only on the military, although these orders were done while he was in a war.
Breakdown:
1. I won’t do this, You will. That is why I made Forums
2. part A is good. Part B is really dumb, of course you’d have them ready, why else have them?
3. This one is only to be used while in a war. Territorial defences take care of themselves otherwise.
4. this one is ok.
5. this one is ok.
Example #3: BEST!

1. Move small fraction of forces to protect newly occupied Liechtenstein.
2. Call out for Military Volunteers, do not initiate Draft.
3. Ready and check all defense mechanisms and devices, road blockades, etc.
4. Begin wartime defense preparation, repair and service airplanes, military vehicles, ships.
5. Ready Rivers for excess water travel.
6. Form Alliance with player (Greenland, India, Pakistan, North South America)
7. Ready for peace talks with Italy, Spain, and Greece
8. Begin production on Greynark and Advanced Lowdog Attack Helicopters
(15 each ETA 1 week per chopper, total of 7 1/2 months)
9. Increase Hydroelectric Power efficiency and output in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
10. Set watch posts in 10-mile intervals around borders.
11. Set Wartime Alert from 0 to 5.
12. Prepare to defend from Germany and Italy.

These are really good orders, if you don’t want any feed back. None of these are external actions. Internal actions can/should be noted to be used at a later date, but aren’t going to get God’s attention. MicroManagement is very apparent here, God doesn’t have time to read about all that, so God won’t. Breakdown:
1. - 4. ok. no feedback required.
5. no feedback required. An explination would be in order as to why he’d do that. Don’t suprise God with your plans, he’s not gonna tell anyway, and he might slam it down if its impossible, so double check!
6. Allainces are something God should know about, and you have better seen God beforehand.
7. ok. no feedback required.
8. Umm… WTF are those? (ETA=GOOD)
9. This isn’t really possible, why wouldn’t it be as efficient as possible?
10. no feedback required. whats the point? thats a really excessive maneuver and would most likely get him called insane.
11 & 12) ok. no feedback required.
ok. no feedback required.
Example #4:

Create alliance with Switzerland.
Begin marine reasearch in Pacific and Atlantic Ocean from South America.
Begin building 200 submarines.
In India, start research for population control programs.

Too short. Too vague.
Breakdown:
again the Alliance thing
research on what?
really? 200? thats about 5 times what the US has today, sure thats realistic.
better research, how about just fund it more? I’m sure they are trying their hardest already
Example #5:

Ally with africa,
and build up a stronger fleet.
Deploy fleet, scattered with weight on north, northwest, and west.
Begin research on stronger ships and subs.

this one is far too short.
Yes I know there are a LOT of ‘bad’ orders. The best orders for me, are very similar to the ones I write (obviously). Unfortuantely I have not saved a single set of Orders because I did them at school.
I will now try and describe Orders how I want them.

Not too many, not to few: touch base on all of the major topics, Internal affairs, Diplomacy, Military, Covert Ops, Science, Production, government, and CIVILIANS. That works out to 8 orders minimum, one for each. Several of them should take more, some need not be mentioned. Numbers aren’t relevant, neither are percentages, just tell me what you want done and I’ll allocate the proper resources, or tell you it can’t be done. Don’t focus on one thing, or one way to win. DON’T PLAN EVERYTHING ON WINNING, have fun too and remember its now the World Sim, no longer World Domination Simlulation. Explain everything, and know that if it takes too long to read, I won’t read it. Weapon specs are allowed, but I don’t care, you shouldn’t be relying on your super-designed weapon anyway. Diplomacy is a MUST, and alliances, treaties, pacts, are NOT all diplomacy is about! Geography is minimal. Space ‘fleets’ are really that big. War is NOT the only reason to play, or way to win.

1. Attempt to raise public moral by any of the following: cutting taxes, declaring a national holiday, raising minimum wage, a national patriotism campaign,or public insulting enemies. (Internal affairs/CIVILIANS)
2. Begin escorting cargo ships through the asteroid belt, watch for pirates.
3. Stage a mock attack on a government facility -> no casualities. Blame ‘Player.’ (Covert Ops)
4. Continue standard trading.(Production)
5. Annouce (very good word, likely to get in World New Report) the first of the SST Peace talks to be held in one month at the ‘Plaza Centrale (government center)’ on ‘my planet’.(Diplomacy)
6. Give additional funding to the ‘Cure for Cancer’ research teams. (Science)
7. Open doors on Immigration to planet, advertise jobs, wealth, and happiness. (government)
8. Continue the exploration of ‘my planet’. Continue extending tube networks.
9. Continue the building of MavLev track. Advertise it, try and get corporate donations.

Breakdown:
1. No feedback. will affect power over public later
2. Simple enough
3. Only God would know its staged, this is a good, yet risky tactic for starting a war or even uniting the public…maybe.
4. Good, NOT war related.
5. Might get into news, could help in winning the game diplomaticly
6. good NON-WEAPON research goal, could even be profitable if found
7. No feedback, good for boosting population
8. No feedback unless something is found. good for boosting resources.
9. A must need for every planet, so logiclly all are in some stage in building it.

remember: These aren’t the only way to write, just examples.
